How to Hire a Doula

Four Types of Doulas:

    Community Doulas:

Community Doulas are professionally trained, culturally competant doulas who chose to work in the non-profit sector. Community based doula program are typically grant funded and offer doula services and childbirth education classes for little or no cost to the families they serve. Funding sources for community programming may have criteria for receiving reduced fee or free services. Examples of criteria may include: risk factors, location of home or hospital, income range, or perhaps participation in other community programs.

When looking to hire a community based doula you should consider the following tips: The doula program should not discriminate based on type of health insurance or lack of insurance. The doula program should have a long history of solid grant funding. The doula program should not be affiliated with any particular hospital or medical professional. The doula program should provide you with the opportunity to meet multiple doulas if you choose. Once you choose to work with a doula, your relationship with your doula and the services you receive from her should be individualized to you, not prescribed by the program administration. You may, however, be asked to participate in surveys or an interview about the service you received.
